About
My love affair with Business Intelligence began many years ago without me noticing it. Business Intelligence, also called Competitive Intelligence, has long been mistaken for pages and pages of text and nice graphs and pictures. That’s not Business Intelligence. That’s a research project. Research is just a small albeit important part of Business Intelligence. How the research is analyzed and then used is what separates plain Research from Competitive Intelligence. The data has to be analyzed so that it can produce a definite recommendation. Fence sitting is not allowed. In fact, failure to come up with a definite or actionable recommendation is considered a failure of Business Intelligence.
What got me to realize that I enjoyed the field of Business Intelligence was when I was given a project to research a company from another country. I had to do this without leaving my house. Months later, I was thanked for my part in the acquisition of their competitor. As I later told the owner of the company, there were no fast cars, no big guns and no femme fatales. But the kid in me couldn’t help feeling the thrill of James Bond when I was able to collect publicly available video showing the insides of their competitor’s offices.
Before crossing to North America, I was a private consultant to companies in danger of not meeting their IT-related deadlines. I basically, went in, assessed the situation and gave a recommendation on whether the deadline was still doable or for them to negotiate for an extension. Nothing in between. The idea of not fence sitting was already natural to me back then.
Cheers!
